[amayausers] digitizing/underlay?

I'm about to digitize my first design and need the wisdom of the group. In
training, underlay wasn't addressed. When I asked, I was told to only add it
if needed. I know I need underlay for lettering, but what about logos &
designs? The Dakota designs don't seem to use underlay. This is confusing for
a newbie like me!
