[access-uk] Re: ssound blaster audidgy 1 or 2? and alternatives

I have come to position that the porblems some Jaws users experience have
more to do with the nature of the Creative drivers under the 2000/XP
platform than Jaws itself. Whilst I wouldn't dispute the intrinsic audio
quality of the Audigy card for what it is, most musicians and sound
enginneer types don't tend to use the Audigy unless price is a
consideration. There are much better units available without some of the
driver issues which have been felt more widely even than Jaws users with the
Creative cards .

Hissy recordings are mostly the result of poor gain optomisation, and with
microphones coupled to relatively poor quality pre-amps sucn as found on
domestic style soundcards.

I suppose you meant Steve Nutt, as I have no experience of sound cards other
than the creative problems I have already described.

However, I must stress that this is only with jaws - my sighted friend who
is as close to a sound engineer as may be, since he produces sound for the
theatre, swears by the audigy range which he says is particularly natural
when using the digital outputs.

I hope Steve Nutt can help you more.

Please note slight change of subject line as I am going to ask Steve, Please
share your findings on alternatives to Soundblaster with the list. I have
already mentioned M-Audio, but their are one or two other manufactureres
that could be worth investigation.

In terms of audio recording and the like sound quality is very important,
but things like latency, which usually come down to the drivers, could also
be important. Also, for our needs, how well they cope with the presence of
a second soundcard for speech, although here I still use an external synth.
