Hi Peter,

I think this may be if you have a PIN turned on on your sim card, such that
you have to enter it before the phone will come on.  It probably kicks in,
before iTunes can restore the phone back to your settings, though I am only
guessing.

I've done a full reset and an upgrade on my iphone and I've never been asked

for a pin on it.
