Ed, I am able to play both books bought from the UK and US sites on my Stream. From what I remember you have to go through the activation process twice so that you can input both your UK username and password and your US one.
What I'm not sure about is if the second activation discounts the first. Which would mean you'd have to repeat the process to put UK materials on again. 

Hope that isn't too confusing.

Hi,
Does anyone know whether it's possible to have 2 Audible activations on one 
SD card for the Stream? I have both an audible.co.uk and an audible.com
account, and would like to put books from both on the same card. However, I 
don't seem to be able to get it to work, so suspect it might not be
possible.
