Hi.

Well, if and when they enable that feature, I'm going to cue up for one to
borrow or if needs must buy. I imagine that only books on your bookshelf will
be accessible through the player since I can't see the player giving you the
ability to search for, add or remove books.

The PTX1 is able to connect to the Internet but it is disabled until the new
service launches. I don't know what the new service will be but if they are
still selling the player with a bookstream subscription then surely it will
play books directly online from the bookstream catalogue?

    Hi Ibrahim,

I agree with you totally. It is not really a level playing field. there
is also a strange situation whereby if you want to be a normal TB member,
either with or without a player, and join the Bookstream service, then you have
to pay two lots of £50, with another £25 for the player.

I would guess that, as the PTX1 is improved, bookstream members will be
able to load their streamed books onto the ptx1. If that happens, then the
next step may well be the facility of normal book borrowing and streaming will
be available from the talking book library as part of ordinary membership.

That would make sense to me, but I am only guessing.

    Hi Ian.

Thanks, but the point I was making was that talking book subscribers seem
to be able to pay around £75 per year and get the latest talking book machine
on loan, yet us BookStream members because we have the online version of the
same catalogue have to buy a player outright. At least RNIB should give us the
option of loaning one in the same way as talking book subscribers. If they
wish, a TBS can pay just £50 for a library only subscription if they've their
own player. We just don't have an equal footing in this regard.

    All the best, Ibrahim.

If you buy a PTX1, you should get your next Book Stream subscription free
as they are currently offering a year's subscription to Book Stream as part of
a PTX1 package.

        Hi.

I'd personally love one, however I'm a BookStream member so not
officially a member of talking books although I have access to the entire
catalo to stream online and request on cd if I so wish. I wish fervently that
we BookStream members could pay a supplement to our fee and receive a loan
player for those occasions that books on cd need to be used IE when the service
not infrequently goes down. As it is, if I want a player, I have to cough up
for one but hay hoe, that's what you get when you do everything online.

        All the best, Ibrahim.

          Hi Eleanor

I'm a member and this is the first I have heard of it. However, I
haven't had time to read 'Read on', so I am at fault there.

I was contacted by the talking library some months ago, but it was
just to see how I rated the current service - No mention of the new talking
book machine.

It's a shame that only new members are eligible. I suppose we could
cancel then re-join.

          Cheers

          Barry

I am wondering how many members on this list use the RNIB Talking
Book Library and ow many of those members were contacted about the new type of
Talking Book machine which can be used with USB Flash Drive. I understand that
there is a pilot going on at present with regard to this machine but equally I
understand that no existing member of the library will be entitled to one of
these new books, only new members will receive them. For those of you in the
pilot, what do you think of the machine and out of interest did the Talking
Book Library contact you directly about this pilot scheme or did you hear about
it through Read-on, the Talking Book Library CD sent out to members.
