And I'd add that, although I don't use specialist devices these days, in my
experience, of those I have used, you couldn't beat Eureka for lay-out,
feedback etc.

As I say, there are merits for both.  I had occasion to write something down
this afternoon which a friend of ours read to me from a piece of paper
containing print and handwriting.  My Sense was at hand to do this.  I
couldn't have written down the info anywhere near as quickly using an iPhone
or iPad, and if I had got my Bluetooth keyboard out to write on that, it
would still have taken longer to pair it than using my immediately available
Sense.  So while I agree the technology is old, there is really no
substitute for a specialist device in situations such as I have described
above.  They have their place, but they need to come down in price, and have
better beta testing.

 Well Steve, blinkered in the sense that when something new comes on the
scene it think it's perfect and reject what's gone before  out of hand.

 I'm not convinced that I could interview people and produce written
material as speedily using a braille displayand phoneo or  ipad inserting
headings and different fonts but I'm happy to be  corrected.

 I'd happily change if I knew it would do the trick but having just one
device has its advantages for portability and quietness  of working.

 I agree it's old technology and they need to get their act together and
coming up with something more versatile.  I don't  know that they will
though!

 What kind of blinkers are you talking of?  In what way is a specialist note
taker more efficient than connecting a Braille display to an iOS  or Android
device, which has much more power anyway?

 Now we have AccessNote for iOS, that is a very efficient way of doing
things.

 I don't think that's what we're discussing.  My argument is that
considering  the amount you pay for these devices, they are basically based
on  1990's  software.  Windows CE on which all of the note takers are based,
will lose  Microsoft support in about 2016 anyway so it's academic.

 There are advantages and disadvantages to using a touchscreen device versus
a bespoke note-taker.  For me, the advantages of an iOS or  Android device
are universal updates, more choice, size and cost.  The advantages of a
dedicated note-taker are quick access to features like word processing, one
unit instead of two to carry around, and better battery life.

 I like a mix of both to be honest, perhaps some old habits die hard?

 agree steve as progress is made in main stream the dedicated devices get
left behind every time.  the only thing i really love about the sense is the
satnav and the ability to write out a document very small device  with good
braille.  the internet on the us 2 is very fast but very restricted so
wonder  which would be the best way to go.  the other plus with a dedicated
device is  batry life.  but say tellorion got loads more apps if also it
could run on  more devices but again you must then use a phone and a braille
device but i  do feel the life of a notetaker for the blind is very much in
the  late  summer so to speak.

 i do know now that i am using my iphone and the tellorion lots more than my
pc.  this could spark a very big long debate on this topic but  yet a very
very important one.  again the big advantage with a dedicated  braille
notetaker is the writing down in braille is so much faster than on a touch
screen.
