Hi Adrian

Have a look at www.novatech.co.uk as they sell machines with the operating system to your requirements. I bought a desk top last month with XP home with no problems. Whether they will ship to France you'll have to ask them that.

Hi Eleanor

Ok yes I could buy one from say dolphin but as you rightly
said they are much more expensive. The one I am using came
from laptops direct and luckily they will ship to France for
an extra £29 but I also want to get the best package for the
money. I am inclined to Waite until just after Christmas
when they will be bringing out new models. I could of course
buy one in France but I will get a french keyboard and that
is very different to the qwerty keyboard. Of course you have
to shop around.

Thanks for asking your friend, there must be other companies
who will ship overseas.

Adrien

Adrien
Could you not buy then from a company that supplies
accessible software to
visually impaired people. Maybe these companies would ship
laptop to France
and maybe they would even do XP Pro. I have a few companies
in mind but I
guess you know them as well as I do. I realize they are
sometimes much more
expensive but you need to weigh up the cost if one of these
companies can do
it for you and ship it. I will ask a friend of mine to ask
her brother who
is blind and working in Brussels where he got his laptop
from and get back
to you off list if she can get me the information.

Hi Eleanor

Thanks for your thoughts, I looked at the website you gave
me, they have some very good offers, mostly vista
unfortunately. It's just unfortunate that xp is still
available but at a much higher price. I was offered a
package with vista down gradable to xp but the company
won't
ship to France which for me is a bit of a problem. I could
get it shipped to a uk address no problem but it's getting
the laptop shipped over here. This could work out very
expensive.

I use hal and unfortunately avg is not very accessible. I
am
looking at single programs, I'll see how it goes. I have
no
vision apart from light and dark so I can't see the screen
at all.

Adrien
I bought a new laptop recently and do not like Vista. I
bought from a
company on-line and bought a Hp for just over £500.00. It
had Windows Vista
but came with a downgrade CD to XP Pro. I am very pleased
with the laptop.
Only thing is you have to do the whole thing from scratch
so
to speak if you
install XP Pro. I use AVG 8.0 Free but then I have some
vision and no
problem. I think Jaws was to make AVG 8.0 Free accessible
but I am not a
Jaws user. I know a lot of visually impaired people who
use
Avast once it
is configured to be fairly accessible.

Hi

I am hoping to purchase a new laptop in the new year. I
am
almost certain that it will be vista and probably either
toshiba Samsung or perhaps one or two other models which
I
am interested in. I have never used vista before, is it
easy
to use?

At present I use pc tools internet security package but I
would like to come away from all in one packages. I am
seriously considering super antispyware, komodo firewall
and
perhaps avast. What other free anti-virus packages are
there
out there apart from avg? I have used this in the past
and
now I believe version 8 is not very accessible. Would
these
three packages be sufficient to protect my system? I am
considering removing pc tools from my machine, how easy
is
it to set up and register these packages, I believe avast
is
a bit tricky? Would these packages work both with xp and
vista?
