Hi DJ,

You've only got to look at the balance sheets for these
companies (available from Companies House for a small fee)
to see that very few are making anything like the profits
made by what you might call "normal business".

If you want to see real rip-offs, just look at the utility
companies in the U.K. and the banks.

A few years ago there was a great hoo ha about the same
subject, so certain charities decided they would start a
sales arm and show the commercial rip-off merchants up for
the money-grabbing thieves they thought we all are.

Well they very soon discovered that a hidden element called
"customer support" crawled out of the woodwork, and whether
it was good or bad support that was given, it still cost
money. Then warranties appeared, and surprise, surprise,
they found that few manufacturers' warranties are worth a
twopenny lollipop.

Just ask our journalist friend, Jackie Cairns, what she has
discovered in comparing the two forms of sales and
marketing. You'll need to be either deaf or thick skinned
when the reply comes, and will probably learn a few terms
that are seldom heard in Ireland, never mind the rest of the
world. (smile)

George.

Steve, and all access tech vendors/retailers.

I realise it's a closely guarded secret but seriously how
much is too much
with this stuff.

How far can the arm be put in?

Are people getting their arms in as much as we believe?

Sorry to pick on yourself mate but you're a very public
figure and often as
not will be honest if if it's not what people want to hear.

Will the endless debates on email lists ever change this
high-way robbery
that makes products only available to people who,

A. Con the system at some level.

BE. Get some establishment to pay for a product on their
behalf, which
often involves some quick talking and quick wittedness on
the users behalf.

C. Long hard saving, which not that many people seem to do
anymore in our
credit debt riddled society.

This stuff is specialised and I get that, I think that
anyone who's been
knocking about with this stuff for a while will admit it
will cost more.

It's rubbish and unfair but there is allot more research and
development,
(mostly on the software side than hardware), that goes on.

I'd just once like for this stuff to come up and some change
to be executed
and something to come out of our debates on mailing lists
rather than just
he usual, we're being ripped off and those pesky Americans
are getting the
good deal again.

Much of which I agree with btw.

One suggestion I'd have for change is the same as they have
in Canada.

Did you know you can actually get updated adaptive tech gear
every couple of
years?

We're talking in your home stuff, stuff that you justify
that helps you live
independently.

I don't want to get into the debate of what we have here
that we'd probably
not wish to do without to have our tech stuff bought for us
because that's
more into the VI Gen area.

Any thoughts?

Dj Paddy
