if the worst comes to the worst you may need to reinstall from scratch.
I am not completely surprised at the problems you are experiencing since
following Microsoft's acquisition  of Skype, the product had probably
been re engineered to death.
GWconnect being discontinued? another unsurprising side effect of
Microsoft s good intentions gone belly up.
