Maybe they should provide a "bare bones" version and sell cheaper apps to add onto your version of access software, to best suit your individual needs.
..... Can't see it happening though!... Mike----- Original Message ----- From: "Barry Hill" <bbinc@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>

I do suspect that there is a sort of monopoly with these companies, with them all working to similar profits. None of them would slash their price as it would be a temporary gain on the others and, in no time, all of them would be losing out on the honey pot.----- I would prefer a product with less bells and whistles at a cheaper price. There's a lot in the version of Jaws I have that I will never use, but I do want it to work with the versions of Windows, etc, that I have. Less crap and just concentrate on compatibility - Would that cut down the price? The thing is, Jaws want to justify their ludicrous price by offering more than the competition, thus bells and whistles. With these new free and cheap app's, I fear that they're going to push these bells and whistles evenmore rather than drop the price. cheers BarryOriginal Message ----- From: "Colin Fowler" <col.fowler@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, June 24, 2010 11:14 AMSubject: [access-uk] Re: Fw: [vicsireland] Digit-Eyes Audio Labeling SystemAdvances Independence For Visually ImpairedI don't wholly agree Barry, the prices are being kept artificially high because of a lack of compettitiveness by the funding sources that supply the funds to purchase such products. I don't believe that 25% couldn't be shaved off the topline of these products, it is just that under the current system it isn't in their best interests to do so. So instead they continue to produce upgrades and new versions with very little added value for the end user and yet still demand more from the people that pay the invoices.----- Original Message ----- From: "Barry Hill" <bbinc@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, June 24, 2010 10:58 AMSubject: [access-uk] Re: Fw: [vicsireland] Digit-Eyes Audio Labeling SystemAdvances Independence For Visually ImpairedCan you see Jaws selling for a 10th of the current price, or the makers of that barcode reader that was mentioned a few days ago selling it for 3% of the current price. It's just not cost effective. How can a company likethese compete with free or $30 apps?I'll tell you what, I'd love to be a fly on the wall in a board meeting at Henter Joyce when the subject comes up of Mac's or the likes of NVDA.Cheers Barry----- Original Message ----- From: "Colin Fowler" <col.fowler@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, June 24, 2010 10:43 AMSubject: [access-uk] Re: Fw: [vicsireland] Digit-Eyes Audio LabelingSystem Advances Independence For Visually Impaired or become as competitive!----- Original Message ----- From: "Barry Hill" <bbinc@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, June 24, 2010 10:40 AMSubject: [access-uk] Re: Fw: [vicsireland] Digit-Eyes Audio LabelingSystem Advances Independence For Visually ImpairedHi allAlthough I like what Apple are doing regarding making access equipment atanaffordable price, I fear that these Apple apps will have a detrimentaleffect on the selection of access equipment.Makers of this sort of equipment say that they have to charge such high prices because their products do not sell enough of each item to make a profit for research and developing the product, although I can't see thisargument being true with Jaws. So, because Apple make the product cheap, if what the others say is true, everyone else could just stop R&D and/or stop making the product.I suppose they'll have to diversify or die. If it does what the blurb suggests, and with the increasing popularity/demand for the Iphone, it looks as though we can at last begin tobypass some of the more expensive kit that only serves oneor two purposes in favour of having a lot of useful applications in the one device. The more I read and hear about the Iphone, the more I am warming to having theusefulness of all the applications over the complexitiesof a touch screen device.
