and has ;anyone attempted to claim VAT back on a Mac? It has a built in screenreader that everyone purchases. So can you argue you bought a Mac because it was accessible out of the box? Or does it mean that it's never possible to argue you bought a Mac for access reasons? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Glenn Tookey" <Glenn.Tookey@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

Gordon, as I see it, this one is to the advantage of blind people. The VAT guidance is clear on computers, if they are adapted for the blind, then the processor is vat exempt. As the processor cannot be separated from the rest of a lap top, then the whole machine is exempt, whereas for a desktop only the processor box is exempt and we have to produce calculation to show how much the value of the processor is.

This practice has been active in the AT market for many years and at least 20 AT companies operate this procedure to my knowledge all over the UK.

Glenn

Hi Steve

I tend to agree with you, I understood the rules to have been amended some time ago to say that VAT was only exempted on equipment manufactured solely for the use of the blind and that equipment adapted for the blind VAt would be reduced on a pro rata basis - however I would not be at all surprised to find that since then further amendments have been made, not to our advantage of course - this is HMRC we are talking about! One thing I would urge though is never, ever mess with HMRC. They do not like it and they can make your day very unhappy indeed.

Hi Glenn,

I would question this. We charge VAT on computers, and I have never seen
anywhere that it states that a computer can be exempted from VAT. Can you point us to the bit of the HMRC web site that says to the contrary? If you
are right, then this is indeed good news, but I am not sure you are.

All the best

Steve

Actually a computer can be sold free of VAT if it is installed with software for the blind at the point of sale. It is the processor unit only, so, this
means a lap top is completely VAT free if sold with a screen reader or
magnifier software installed and a desktop system processor unit is free of vat, but the monitor, keyboard and mouse and any other accessories are not
free of VAT.

At Sight and Sound Technology we sell lap top and desktop bundles which
includes transfer and re-install of screen reader or magnifier software all
VAT free.

The challenge for us is that without VAT we still struggle to match PC World type pricing as they buy 10,000 a time, but we are in the same ball park and
we do configure and load and then support the whole system which the high
street retailer cannot do.

Glenn

No. It is your software for blind people that you can claim the VAT back
on. A computer is not made especially for blind people.

Hi Folks

I've just had to break the bank and replace my PC. As an afterthought I
wonder can I claim back the VAT on the PC as it is only for my use? Any
links to info or forms much appreciated.

Thanks
Martin
