Not unusual to have to do a clean install of Win9x after a while. Assuming 
you have a good backup program in place you shouldn't lose anything. If 
not, then shame on you.

First you can try installing Win98 over itself. Works temporarily sometimes.

Personally, I'd try to get WinXP on there. If it's a desktop just buy a new 
hard drive and run XP setup from Win98 and it'll automatically create a 
dual boot situation for you. Do NOT try to upgrade that Win98 setup! If you 
do swing this, once you get XP running you can copy stuff as needed from 
your old C: drive.

But be sure you can return the WinXP cd if you can't get it working - a lot 
of older hardware won't work with XP no matter how much you try.
