Following up hot from our last update regarding the PP run of the keyboards,
they have arrived in the UK and are now heading to SMS for the final assembly
testing where we’ll run a small batch of Spectrum Next computers from
assembly to firmware burning, from board to box, with every step tested and
generating a couple of dozens of Spectrum Nexts ready for storage and later
shipping to backers. Here SMS will put the entire assembly setup through its
paces at last, ensuring everything is in place and tweaking any procedures
required to generate the final article: The Spectrum Next in all its beauty.
Step to the left, step to the right...
The PP run of the cases is slightly behind the keyboards, but we’re aiming to
have it shipping to the UK next week directly to SMS. Regardless, the
keyboards are now cleared for mass production, having succeeded at the PP
step.
Now it’s for the keyboard manufacturer to go for scale, ship all keyboards to
the UK following in the footsteps of the PP run. The same is expected to
happen with the cases, albeit running a couple of weeks behind the keyboards
as it currently stands.
Meanwhile, we have a bunch of cool videos and images of the keyboards, such
as the 'black magic' laser etching of the keys, more keyboards and, of
course, the mandatory packaging shots.
The invasion is upon us, sir! They outnumber us 3 to 1!
5 to 1! They outnumber us 5 to... A lot. There's a lot of them. You get the
idea.
Time to put them in their places.
As soon as the cases PP is on its way to the UK, we’ll post a new update to
keep up with the progress of the project, and assembly images straight from
the SMS plant, showing boxed Nexts being piled up.
Firmware 1.1 is upon us
We’re now at the landmark 1.1 version of the firmware, the very one that will
be burned into all the Nexts at SMS. We shipped the code to our friends in
Nottingham this week, locking up this step of the project -- there's no
turning back now. This is the firmware you’ll experience when you first boot
your Next fresh out of the box.
The effort that has been put into the firmware’s making is just humongous,
and owed to a host of incredible people who devoted their time to make the
Next a magic machine, better than we could ever have hoped. Make sure to head
