I don't know how I missed this. I'm normally very careful about checking the
logs. Mind you it was a very long list :(
The suggestions offered didn't work for me, so what I ended up doing was the
completely remove SSH, then disable the 'testing' repository and do a fresh
update, the re-install SSH.
It seems OK now, but presumably I'll have to bite the bullet eventually. The
trouble is these sort of things you tend to do once then completely forget
about. I have no idea at all how to generate a new higher security key pair -
that is assuming the repositories will accept it! Also, I'm a bit puzzled that
github and sourceforge gave totally different behaviour.
Incidentally, during the upgrade kdiff3 was completely removed. I've no idea
why, and I was able to re-install it without any issues. I think this is maybe
a warning for anyone intending to go to 'testing' to be very, very careful :(
