This reminds me, a volunteer scheme is also something that the BES
conference offers, although it is only the conference fee that is covered
and not the accommodation - there is an allowance for meals too. I did this
one year and not only was it a good way of getting expenses covered, but it
also offered a chance to network for those who might be a bit shy. You get
to meet other volunteers, but also speak to quite a few of the speakers and
session chairs.

when I went to the ACES conference some years ago, I joined a voluntaries'
program that the conference had, in which by helping with the conference
organization on-site (handing mics and stuff like that) they covered the
conference fee and the hotel stay (same hotel as conference). I thought
that was a good scheme.

The meeting also has quite a lot of activities for ECRs too (full day
careers workshop prior to the conference, additional discussion groups
