Sent on behalf of Dr Carlos Loureiro – University of Stirling;

SUBJECT: PhD Studentships in nature-based solutions for coastal adaptation in
Scotland (NERC IAPETUS2 Doctoral Training Partnership)

Dear colleagues,

We have three great competition-funded PhD opportunities through the NERC
IAPETUS2 Doctoral Training Partnership (https://www.iapetus2.ac.uk) to join a
friendly and award-winning research team in Glasgow and Stirling Universities.
The team has experience of working in academia, government and industry. PhD
students funded via this scheme would gain access to excellent NERC funded
training and also be able to join two Scottish funding pools (SAGES and MASTS)
which increase training, networking and funding opportunities.

We are looking for applicants interested in coastal processes and management in
a changing climate with a background in Natural Sciences and Engineering,
including Geography and Earth Science, Marine and Ocean Science, Environmental
Science and Engineering, Coastal Engineering or closely related fields.

Brief descriptions of the projects can be found in the individual adverts (link
below each project topic). One project has CASE funding from the Environment
Agency so students can gain practical work experience during their PhD and the
other two, for which CASE support is being sought, directly link to the
Scottish Government’s flagship Dynamic Coast resources
(www.dynamiccoast.com<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dynamiccoast.com%2F&data=04%7C01%7Ccarlos.loureiro%40stir.ac.uk%7C774c60a53e004afadc7d08d895379976%7C4e8d09f7cc794ccb9149a4238dd17422%7C0%7C0%7C637423413314628933%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=hy8nSPTw%2FaULUcoshs8ZWIEKA%2Fjv22PHijbBaBEojYY%3D&reserved=0>),
providing students will excellent career and research opportunities alike.

PhD topic 1) Future proofing Scotland’s remote coastal areas: evaluation of the
potential for nature-based coastal adaptation [Dr C Loureiro, Prof L Naylor, Dr
A Rennie]

PhD topic 3) Scaling up Greening the Grey and Eco-engineering Science through
partnership with coastal infrastructure asset managers: creating co-benefits
for science and operational practice [Prof L Naylor, Dr K Cameron, Prof P
Moore,  with CASE support from the Environment Agency]
