This week we are hosting the ESP Africa conference together with Plateforme des 
Organisations de la Société Civile pour la Sauvegarde des Montagnes (PSM) and 
Global Mountain Biodiversity Assessment.

The conference kicked off on Monday with a speech from His Excellency the 
Minister of Environment of Togo and a keynote by Martieuw Chimere Diaw on "The 
Africa IPBES Assessment and Africa Model Forest Network".

  *   A recent paper resulted from joint efforts of TWG 11 with the sDiv

  *   Members of the network published a paper showing that postponing 
conservation actions will impair ecosystem services and increase conflict 
between conservation and human activities in the Brazilian Cerrado. Read

  *   The TEEB Regional-Local project, which deals with the Economics of

number of important results were achieved in this period, promoting the natural

Greece (HESP)
A new research paper has been recently published in One Ecosystem Journal:

Malta

  *   Successful training course on ecosystem services and green infrastructure 
in Malta. Dr Mario Balzán, a member of the ESP Mediterranean working group, 
recently led a training course on ecosystem services and green infrastructure 
in Malta. The training course is framed within the EU-funded ReNature project, 
that aims to establish and implement a nature-based solutions research strategy

  *   Collaborative Science for Estuaries Webinar: “Exploring Applications of 
Ecosystem Services Conceptual Models for Coastal Habitats” by Lydia Olander and 
Sara Mason on 26 June.
  *   NESP will be hosting the webinar: “Interpreting the IPBES Global 
Assessment” by Steve Polasky and Alex Pfaff two of the IPBES Assessment authors 
on 1 August.

Training course: Measuring Ecosystem Services & Essential Biodiversity Variables
This course centers on building capacity in the areas of measuring and 
quantifying ecosystem services and essential biodiversity variables. The course

International MSc programme on Ecosystem Services at IHI Zittau
The International Institute (IHI) Zittau, TU Dresden, Germany is now accepting 
applications for the international Masters programme on Ecosystem Services. The 
programme is devoted to understanding the causes of biodiversity loss and 
ecosystem degradation as well as to analysing their impacts on ecosystem

Natural Capital Checker – beta version launched
The Natural Capital Checker (NatCap Checker) provides practitioners with a 
self-assessment tool that enables them to assess, communicate and improve the 
level of confidence in their natural capital assessments. The Checker helps 
organizations to evaluate how credible and fit for purpose their assessments 
are, and therefore the level of confidence that stakeholders can place in the 
process, results, and ultimately the decisions taken based on a natural capital
