Speaking of the ribbon, I use a program to get the classic menus (File/Edit/View...) showing as itself a menu item (called of course "Menu") and I am completely happy with it. Works also in Excel and other Office products. Free trial:

I find the save-as (export) functions of MS-Word impossibly wordy.
Saving an MS-Word document as RTF, XML, or HTML generates such a flood
of useless formatting code that I usually just save-as plain text and
do all my formatting in Xy instead.

The other direction, from Xy to MS-Word is easier. One can replace the
Xy formatting (bold, italic, indent, etc.) fairly easily with HTML
tags (a few strategic save-gets will pre-off-load much of this work),
and a final brush-up with ChangeVerify to clean up the last few bits
will accomplish this with little fuss. MS-Word can then import HTML
files and re-format them for MS-Word output. Be prepared for massive
file size bloat.

Removing the buzzers and bells from MS-Word ... One can simplify the
GUI by turning off the "ribbon" and hiding the tool bar (see
screenshots), but switching off the code running in the background is
not on the menu.
