This edition of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine newsletter discusses their
"Imagine People Here" initiative, which is a way for citizens to suggest
infrastructure changes in their communities to enhance the safety and
visibility of pedestrians and bicyclists. It's very relevant to what
happened this week, and could also incorporate some of Michael
Shaughnessy's ideas in the recent "Paint the Streets" project that resulted
in all that nice street art in the park.

*Becoming The Change In Saco: Imagine People Here Today*
Through our I*magine People Here* program, we're showing communities how
they can improve safety and access for pedestrians and bicyclists by
installing temporary projects that demonstrate how easily positive change
can be made.

It's been tremendously successful, and in most places the improvements that
began life as temporary have become permanent, welcomed change.

The next *Imagine People Here* project is set for noon today in Saco, where
Coalition staff will be installing equipment to enhance the visibility of
three crosswalks on Main St., at Storer, Pleasant and Thornton.

The improvements will be in place for at least two weeks. If you see them, let
us know what you think

*Want To Do Your Own Imagine People Here Project? We Can Help*
If you want to try your hand at creating an Imagine People Here project, we
can help: we're developing an Imagine People Here Toolkit that anyone can
use.

This toolkit is designed to be a short, user-friendly guide to planning and
executing demonstration projects. It includes an overview on the basics of
bicycle and pedestrian advocacy, insight about how to choose a site and how
to secure permission from municipal leaders, public outreach, and other
practical considerations.

It also contains three modules describing how to create demonstrations of
bike lanes, enhanced crosswalks, and wayfinding signage.

The new toolkit will be available to anyone for download on the Coalition
website by the end of the year.

If you want to take things to the next level, though, you'll need some
different tools - bollards, stencils, painting equipment, etc. - to put
together a successful installation. All of that material will be available
via the new Imagine People Here Lending Library, which we hope to launch early
next year.

*Oct. 4 Is International Walk To School Day*
October 4 is International Walk to School Day, and around the country,
students, educators, community leaders and partners will come together to
celebrate the act of walking to school.

Mayors and other elected officials are being encouraged to join the Walk to
School events and show their commitment to safe walking for children and
youth.

Here's how you can help.

*Sign Up For Our Nov. 9 Community Spokes Training And Learn How To Become
The Change In Your Town*
One our primary objectives at the Bicycle Coalition of Maine is to make
things better for bicycling and walking, and one of the ways we do that is
by pushing for change at the local, state, and federal levels.

But we can't be everywhere at once.

Which is why we created our innovative *Community Spokes* program.

The *Community Spokes* program seeks to create a powerful, statewide
network of bicycle and pedestrian advocates who work at the local level
where they live, a cadre of people who can become champions of better
biking and walking in their hometowns.

We provide training, education, and ongoing technical support, and
Community Spokes become leaders in their communities, improving biking and
walking conditions through infrastructure, education, and policy changes.

If you're interested, the next training is coming up Nov. 9 in Farmington. Sign
up here.
