Events
BikeMaine-ia!
Our seventh annual BikeMaine event took place from September 7-14 and
brought 450 riders through Waterville, Hope, Damariscotta, Rockland, and
Belfast.

Not only was the ride a success, but the positive vibes kept rolling right
into registration for BikeMaine 2020: Katahdin Frontier—which has already
sold out of all 100 early bird spots!

Thanks to all the riders, volunteers, locals, sponsors, partners, and BCM
staff who helped make the 2019 event such a success!
Bikes & Beers (& Beautiful Weather)!
Only a week after BikeMaine, the BCM held another event: Bikes & Beers on
September 21!

Thanks to the Bikes & Beers event team for putting on the 15- and 30-mile
rides and making the BCM a beneficiary, to Maine Beer Company for hosting
and providing the brews, and to all the volunteers for lending their time.

It was a successful (and sunny) day for sure!
VBP @ the Fair & the Point
We wrapped up a busy valet bike parking season with two final events:

The Common Ground Fair from September 20 - 22 in Unity, and the Shakey
Graves concert at Thompson's Point in Portland on September 18.

We will continue offering this FREE service next year at various events
around Maine...
so stay tuned!
A (Mc)Dreamy Day for the Dempsey
Did you participate in the Dempsey Challenge on September 29 in Auburn?

If so, you may have seen the BCM at the final rest stop, where we supported
cyclists with snacks & water to fuel them down the homestretch.

Thanks to everyone who came out to support the event, which helps provide
services to patients battling cancer.
Advocacy
Imagine People Here (in
North Yarmouth!)
The BCM, Maine DOT, and Town of North Yarmouth coordinated on an
ambitious Imagine
People Here demonstration aimed at calming traffic on Route 115 in North
Yarmouth.

We've already received lots of feedback on this demo and welcome your
comments—both positive and negative—as we determine which parts of the
temporary installation will become permanent.
Building Boardwalks
BCM Assistant Director Jim Tasse snuck in some time before BikeMaine to
lead a crew of trail builders on September 4.

That day, the hardworking team held a boardwalk build in Cape Elizabeth to
support local mountain bikers and hikers in their quest to get outdoors.

Look for this 200-foot section of boardwalk on your next ride in the Cape!
Bollards in Bangor
On September 16, as part of our Imagine People Here demos, staff from the
BCM working in partnership with Walk-n-Roll, AARP Maine, and the City of
Bangor installed flexible posts at several crosswalks on Harlow Street to
calm traffic and improve the safety of pedestrians attempting to cross the
road.

“The point of these demonstrations is to show that traffic can be calmed
and slowed near pedestrian crossings for a fraction of the cost of
installing beacons or resetting curbing," said BCM Assistant Director Jim
Tasse.
Education
Intro to MTB
The BCM’s Erik DaSilva has been running a series of Intro to Mountain Biking
skill clinics over the last few weeks.

Participants focused on improving riding efficiency, gaining better control
their bikes, how to choose the best “line” in variable terrain, and perform
basic trailside repairs.
Westbrook Safety Day
The always-active bike advocate John Brooking held a rodeo at the Westbrook
Safety Day on September 21.

137 reflective bracelets were distributed and 67 people
participated—including two special guests. Thanks for flying the BCM flag,
John!
Bicycles at the Tri
John Brooking was at it again the very next weekend, holding a Tri by the
Sea bike rodeo on September 28.

Maine's littlest learners thoroughly enjoyed the event, which was held at Cape
Elizabeth High School.
