Hi All,
Here is something you all might be interested in....

    Linda Hall Library Lecture Series

*The BIG Promise of Small Science: An Introduction to Nanoscience and
Nanotechnology *

*Dr. Karen Nordell*
*Department of Chemistry, Lawrence University*

In 1959, Richard Feynman asked the question, "What would happen if we
could arrange atoms one by one the way we want them?" Today, the
emerging fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology are enabling control
of the material world at the scale of atoms and molecules.
Nanotechnology is inherently interdisciplinary and allows for new
approaches to research and education through interdisciplinary
connections between many fields including chemistry, physics, biology
and materials science. This broad interdisciplinarity contributes much
to the novelty of this new field, and will likely cause widespread
change in the way science is pursued in the 21st century. This
presentation will provide a glimpse at some of today's hottest
nanoscience and nanotechnology developments including the
instrumentation that allows us to 'see' or image individual atoms as
well as the preparation of many types of nanoparticles and their
applications. Lastly, this presentation will explore some of the
potential ethical and environmental implications of nanoscience and
nanotechnology.

This lecture will be presented on Thursday, May 19, 2005, at 5:30 p.m.
in the Library's Main Reading Room
