Hi Budd, I still have reservations about the man in the room understanding and following rules in English. In that respect the CRT fails as a proper model of a UTM. I still like my Language Room Argument, in which the man starts with a complete semantic deficit, follows the rules via a non-linguistic method, and fails to obtain understanding of anything whatsoever. My argument seems much cleaner, but in the final analysis I have to agree with you that Searle had no other way to make his point. My LRA would make sense mainly to those who already grok the contentious 3rd axiom. -gts --- On Sat, 4/10/10, gabuddabout <wittrsamr@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: > From: gabuddabout <wittrsamr@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> > Subject: [Wittrs] Yes: Meanings and Properties [Was: The CRA: Is the Third > Premise True?] > To: wittrsamr@xxxxxxxxxxxxx > Date: Saturday, April 10, 2010, 4:11 PM > Gordon writes: > > > Because Dennett and Stuart cannot refute the true > meaning of axiom 3, they have no choice but to change the > subject and try to say that Searle got his own thought > experiment wrong. > > > > -gts > > > > Hi Gordon, > > So tell me, what has since convinced you that he didn't, to > use your own words from a few months ago! :-), "muck up his > own thought experiment" given the complication from the > target article that the humunculus had to know English in > order to draw the moral between functional and first-order > properties? > > > Cheers, > Budd > > > > ========================================= > Need Something?
