I live near Covered Bridge Cty Park - Ozaukee Cty. Had, as many have
noted, many Downys, Hairys and Red Bellies over the past few years. This
year - way down. A few Downys and Hairys - but no Red Bellies.. My theory
-no fresh infected ash trees. All now dead - no borers to eat. Dozens of
dead trees on our few acres - what a mess.

Hello all. Here in Manitowoc, the city took a very aggressive approach to
infested ash trees by cutting them all
down. We understand what the problems are going forward, but this has
been devastating to our YARD woodpeckers
as we live across from a city park area where the trees have been taken
down. We are not seeing our regular
woodpeckers (downy, hairy, red belly) at the feeders. If you all have
ever been to Silver Lake Park you'll find
the same thing - trees cut and laying where it used to be prime
environment for stop over spring warblers.
So yes, I have seen our yard woodpeckers literally disappear in 2020.

I have had no disruption in my yard visitors: Downy, Red Belly and Hairy
(Flickers show up by the end of Feb.). Numbers appear to be normal.
BTW- yesterday at 3:40pm, traveling east bound on HWY49, out of HNWR,
going up the hill we saw a beautiful Short Eared Owl sitting very close to
the road in some trees on the East side of the road. It even let us snap a
few pictures with our camera phone.

I havenât had a Pileated in the neighborhood in several years, at least
that Iâve seen. The rest have been about the same - a couple few, here and
there. And yes, our Ash trees are pretty much gone as well.

I live in north-central Door County in a woodland with many different
hardwood trees and some conifers. There are more downy woodpeckers, 5 to 6
of them, than others, but I daily see at least 2 red-bellied, 2 hairy and 4
pileated woodpeckers that come to the marvel meal feeder.
There are several ash trees in the woods that have the bark pulled off in
strips by the woodpeckers. The emerald ash borers have infected many trees
in our county over the past five years.
