So sorry to learn this is not a private list. Â But as someone mentioned below,
a list member knew better, but didn't DO better and it appeared that a bird
suffered the consequences. Â I am curious how this can be viewed by anyone with
an internet connection? Â I honestly thought it was by invite only and
private. Â Will remember that one thing going forward because I too have seen
someone harassing a snow owl at Collina Marsh. Â

Where is the new nest located? I found the web cam and it is listed as
Wisconsin Public Service Building but I can���t picture the spot from the
view in the camera. Can it be seen from the ground like the old one that use to
be on the Pulliam Plant? It has nice new carpet but I haven���t seen a
bird. On Wednesday I did find a peregrine on top of the Cofrin Library at UWGB,
he/she was sitting on top of the F in Cofrin.

the audience is likely to consist of serious birders who know proper birding
etiquette. I am not sure I would let the general public know of nest locations
due to the likelihood of birds being harassed with too much attention from
folks that don*t respect the birds* need for quiet space .

I would not post nest locations as I had an interaction with someone on this
list a few years ago involving a snowy owl. I saw them going into a farm field
to get close for a picture and cautioned them not to. They specifically stated
it was okay because they were part of this group, and they continued toward the
owl, scaring it away. The owl was found dead the next day, and upon examination
was found to have starved. So some people on the list know better, but still
don*t behave like they should.

people*s behavior around nest sites, I am now convinced that it is a bad idea

My comments is that all nest box locations (confirmations) should be
entered on the breeding bird atlas and Nick and Ryan have some species that
are sensitive where nest box locations are not posted.
If the data is entered on ebird I do not see a problem with mentioning this
on wisbird, however it is probably not necessary on wisbird to enter the
exact location.

Tim is quite right - this listserv requires a subscription to be able to post
messages, but anyone with an internet connection can read it via the various
archived versions.
As a general rule, I would advise against posting nest locations of most
species, but particularly raptors. Licensed falconers may legally take young
from raptor nests under certain circumstances. Certainly, you should enter such
sightings onto eBird (using the Breeding Bird Atlas portal,) and "hide" the
list (checking the box near the bottom of the right-side menu.)
Peregrine nest boxes on structures would be an exception, as they are obviously
inaccessible to the general public. Osprey nests on structures such as cell
towers and power poles would also likely fit that description, as they are
extremely unlikely to be molested (although the capacity for stupidity in some
people often dismays and astounds me ).
While we're on the general subject, also remember not to post exact locations
of Whooping Crane sightings, outside of the known release locations such as
Necedah and Horicon NWRs, where the cranes are (usually) well out in the
restricted areas of the refuges. An exception would be if they were in a nearby
field outside of the refuge boundaries. In that case, just give a general
location, such as "on the uplands east of Horicon Marsh". That covers a lot of
ground. If you do spot one, remember to give it plenty of space - preferably
stay in your car and use it as a blind to observe or photograph the bird.
Lastly, since I haven't mentioned it in quite some time, remember to put your
name and location on your posts to Wisbirdn!

Today, 3/29, I saw my personal first-of-year (FOY) Red-necked Grebe from the
southernmost bench on the bluff in Virmond Park.
I know I've said this in the past, but for people who might be new to the
list and not be familiar with Virmond Park, to view waterfowl, a scope is
almost mandatory. You are looking from a high bluff and most often the birds
are rather far out, so if you go there with just binoculars, you will
probably be disappointed.
A (FOY) Winter Wren was foraging at the edge of the "pond in the wood" near
the parking lot that is closest to the bluff.
And, (FOY) Eastern Phoebe was in Doctors Park in Milwaukee County with
another at Covered Bridge Park in Ozaukee County.

Tim is quite right - this listserv requires a subscription to be able to
post messages, but anyone with an internet connection can read it via the
various archived versions.
As a general rule, I would advise against posting nest locations of most
species, but particularly raptors. Licensed falconers may legally take
young from raptor nests under certain circumstances. Certainly, you should
enter such sightings onto eBird (using the Breeding Bird Atlas portal,) and
"hide" the list (checking the box near the bottom of the right-side menu.)
Peregrine nest boxes on structures would be an exception, as they are
obviously inaccessible to the general public. Osprey nests on structures
such as cell towers and power poles would also likely fit that description,
as they are extremely unlikely to be molested (although the capacity for
stupidity in some people often dismays and astounds me ).
While we're on the general subject, also remember not to post exact
locations of Whooping Crane sightings, outside of the known release
locations such as Necedah and Horicon NWRs, where the cranes are (usually)
well out in the restricted areas of the refuges. An exception would be if
they were in a nearby field outside of the refuge boundaries. In that
case, just give a general location, such as "on the uplands east of Horicon
Marsh". That covers a lot of ground. If you do spot one, remember to give
it plenty of space - preferably stay in your car and use it as a blind to
observe or photograph the bird.
Lastly, since I haven't mentioned it in quite some time, remember to put
your name and location on your posts to Wisbirdn!

We can view at least three subspecies of Horned Larks in Wisconsin. All have
different facial/neck patterns which can be observed. The Prairie Horned Lark,
*Eremophila alpestris praticola** is the first one we see in early spring and
the one that nests here. Some overwinter too. Migrants through Wisconsin are
the nominate species E. a. alpestris, North American Horned Lark, which nest in
northeast Canada and E. a. hoyti, Hoyt*s Horned Lark in northern central
Canada. Both of those migrate through Wisconsin later than our Prairie Horned
Larks. In fact our larks often have nests and eggs by early April when the
northern subspecies are passing through. I think you can find good photos of
these subspecies if you google.
The phenology is very similar to Canada Geese. Our local *Greater* Canada geese
are often hatching in 2nd to 3rd week of April, which is when the Canadian,
Canada Geese that are feeding in our flooded corn fields right now, finally
pull out and head to the arctic.
