I spent a good part of the day checking out various spots mainly in Dodge and
columbia counties. There were two excellent shorebird spots. The first was
along the Auto Tour Rd in Horicon Marsh and the other was the east end of the
Harvey/DM pond along Wagsness Rd. The first had 8 shorebird species. I was
there before 7:30 and had what Tom wood reported on his post later that
morning. The difference was that there were 30 Pectoral sandpipers and a
Wilson,s Snipe also present with the first leaving after several minutes. The
2 Virginia Rails were calling before 7:30 a.m.When I returned in mid-afternoon
the 4 Dunlins were still present and the Black-necked Stilts were close to the
road feeding, not way back as early morning. The other shorebird spot had 7
shorebird species, with the Bairdâs Sandpiper and 2 Black-necked Stilts being
the best. Other FOY birds today were a Forsterâs Tern along Legend Rd in
the marsh, a Common Loon at Whalen Grade, 1 Purple Martin at the nature center
along 49, also a Barn Swallow in that general area, and 2 Chipping sparrows at
MacKenzie Center. Other lingering birds included 65 White-fronted Geese, 2
Snow (Blue) Geese and a Cackling Goose at Goose Pond. The Rowan Creek parking
area and trails are almost totally cleared of the log stacks. A Tufted
Titmouse was calling by the parking lot (I did not walk the trails today).
It was a fun day of birding despite the weather, especially the good birds,,
and running into several birders I had not seen in quite some time. Good luck!
