All
I haven't done much targeted birding recently, instead I'm spending most of my
time getting my 2 gardens ready as well as cutting, splitting and stacking
wood. Here are a few observations from the last 2 weeks.
* While walking thru my farm neighbor's woods about 10 days ago, I flushed
one of the barred owls that has lived there for several years. I often hear
one or both of the pr when I'm working at my farm garden. They can call any
time of the day.
* On that same hike I saw a few golden crowned kinglets.
* While walking along the edge of the marsh on my farm property, I came
upon a group of 10 or so wood ducks (mostly males) and 4 hooded mergs.
* My farm property is on CTH J a little ways from Leipsig just S of the
bridge over the Beaver Dam R. This is about a mi from the bald eagle nest on
CTH G. I often see eagles at the bridge...sometimes adults, sometimes
immatures, and sometimes both.
* This past Sunday I checked out the pond on Jersey Rd off CTH A. As Daryl
had mentioned, there were 40-50 pectoral sandpipers, a few snipe, both
yellowlegs, a fair variety of ducks and one whooping crane. Shortly after I
arrived another birder told me a Eurasian wigeon was present. He pointed to
the area where he had seen it but while he was pointing it took off. I thought
I might have seen once after that but only got quick look and due to the fog
and mist lighting was terrible. I checked later that day and each of the last
2 days but have not seen it. The whooping crane was still present as of
yesterday.
* After my visit to Jersey rd on Sunday, I went to Ledge Rd on Horicon
Marsh and immediately found the surf scoter.
* Yesterday there were several YR warblers in the crab apple tree next to
my farm garden.
Stay safe everyone
