38,953,732 observations have been submitted to eBird thus far. Yes, you read it right: more than 38 million. Bill Pulliam from Tennessee is a little like me - only a lot more so. He has kept records of his observations for more than 30 years. He finally has entered over 4,000 of his checklists into eBird, including records of all of the 591 species on his life list - observations from 45 states. Bill has gone way past me: more species, more checklists (but I still have many more to enter!), more states. I've entered lots of checklists so far, but they are nothing compared to Bill (or indeed compared to Kay Kavanagh, or Jim Frank, or Chuck Heikkinen, all from Wisconsin, and all with more than 7500 checklists entered - each!) Herew's a quote from an online Audubon article about eBird (by Shawn Query), and in it an embedded quote from Pulliam: 'As long as people like Pulliam contribute checklists, the possibilities it poses for bird conservation?at least in the Western Hemisphere?are endless. ?I kept my field notes for 30 years,? Pulliam says. ?And for all those years I was wondering ?Who?s ever going to use this information?? ? Now he?s got his answer.' William P.
