Wisbirders Last Sun, Mon and Tues, Jann and I were in New Orleans to attend a conference. After the conference, we headed west to Breaux Bridge, LA where we met up with former Wisbirder, John Romano. We spent Wed along the SW coast of LA. Best birds here were Nelson's sparrow, seaside sparrow (this was a lifer for John), piping plover, reddish egret, boat-tailed grackle, scissor-tailed FC, and a variety of common shore and water birds. On the way back, we saw a caracara, which was a LA bird for John. The next day we did a 4-hr swamp tour with a commercial fisherman. There wasn't much birdwise but as a fish biologist it was interesting to hear the common names they used. For example, the fisherman said he used live perch as bait for yellow catfish. Turns out the term perch is used for anything in the genus Lepomis...in this case it was a large bluegill. Yellow cat is flathead cat. At one point a boat in front of us hit a paddlefish, which became dinner for John and his friend.
