South of the Sheboygan power plant is the Arthur Jerving Conservancy, which
currently has record-high water levels. Driving east of S. Lakeshore Drive
on Weeden Creek Road, we saw numerous ducks in the Black River on the south
side of the bridge. Stopped very briefly to count them: 27 Wood Ducks!
Many of them gorgeous drakes! : ) Continued on to Kohler-Andrae State
Park, where we walked the Black River Marsh Boardwalk and then the south
loop of the campground. Very quiet! In the tiny pond at the beginning of
the boardwalk we found 4 more Wood Ducks. We were hoping for Soras, but
found none. In fact, we haven't seen or heard a one so far this year. Very
unusual, as in all previous years they were usually numerous and very vocal
and occasionally visible. This year we have also not seen any Sedge Wrens,
Least Flycatchers, or Eastern Phoebes. Strange.
