A few of us had a tremendous Warbler wave at Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary
in Green Bay today from 10:30 to noon or so. The Warblers were incredibly
thick in the area encompassing the director's residence, triangle,
beginning of the boardwalk, and even all of the way out to East Shore Dr.
With easily 300+ Warblers we often saw 5 or more birds through our
binoculars at one time. All of them were foraging at 15' or lower for the
first hour, with approx half on the ground. 75% were Yellow-rumped, 15%
were Palm.
We birded the rest of the Sanctuary for another 3.5 hours. There were a
large numbers of birds in other pockets but nothing like what was
experienced at the entrance.
Nothing unusual was seen. The highlights were 40+ OVENBIRD, 6
GOLDEN-WINGED, BLUE WINGED, 3 BAY BREASTED, FOY WILSON'S, 3 TOWHEES,
LINCOLN'S SPARROW, many RB GROSBEAK, SCARLET TANAGER, a decent thrush
movement including several VEERY and WOODTHRUSH. Empids and Kingbirds
showed up today as well.
21 species of Warbler for the day.
