Today was our most species-rich outing of the season with a total of 61 species tallied, including 11 first-of-seasons for the count. Out on the lake, the first Willets (11) were added to the species total. Double-crested Cormorant (1099), Red-breasted Merganser (786), Bonaparte's Gull (250), Caspian Tern (80) and Common Loon (14) were moving in good numbers. Greater Scaup (5), Lesser Scaup (2), Common Goldeneye (1) and Long-tailed Duck (6) numbers continue to dwindle. Pied-billed Grebe (2) and Wood Duck (1) were noted for the first time in a few weeks. And while Herring and Ring-billed gull numbers were down, a Great Black-backed Gull and first-of-season Thayer's Gull kept things interesting gull-wise. For the most part, though, the major activity was occurring behind me. Some early morning fog allowed me to scour the trees around the count site and they were positively dripping with Yellow-rumped Warblers (95), Ruby-crowned Kinglets (55) and Golden-crowned Kinglets (42), among many other species. First-of-seasons included Black-throated Green Warbler (4), Nashville Warbler (4), Palm Warbler (2), Pine Warbler (1), Yellow Warbler (1), Red-headed Woodpecker (1), Red-breasted Nuthatch (1), Winter Wren (2) and Chipping Sparrow (9). In the air, Tree Swallow (36), Barn Swallow (12), Northern Rough-winged Swallow (7), Cliff Swallow (3), Bank Swallow (2) and Purple Martin (6) continue to be seen regularly. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S18151284 Jonathan Stein Belgium, WI #################### You received this email because you are subscribed to the Wisconsin Birding Network (Wisbirdn).
