*Grassland Bird Monitoring in the Lower Chippewa River*
Beaver Creek Reserve and The Prairie Enthusiasts-Chippewa Savannas
Chapter seeks enthusiastic individuals who desire hands-on experience in
field ornithology to participate in a citizen based monitoring
project surveying grassland birds within key sites of the Lower Chippewa
River. The program will provide volunteers with opportunities to gain skills
and knowledge related to field ornithology, monitoring methods, bird
biology, bird identification, and habitat conservation.
Beaver Creek Reserve Citizen Science Center and The Prairie
Enthusiasts-Chippewa Savannas Chapter are working together on a long-term
citizen based monitoring project to determine the species and abundance of
birds that utilize grasslands and savannas within the Lower Chippewa River
(LCR). Surveys will fulfill a need for widespread bird surveys in the LCR
and will monitor trends in bird populations that depend on grassland
habitats.

Surveys will be located in the Dunnville Wildlife Area and the Tyrone
Property. Both properties contain significant prairie and savanna landscapes
along the shores of the LCR. The Lower Chippewa River is considered a
critical Important Bird Area due to large numbers of rare and high priority
avian species this area supports.

Grassland birds are defined as those species using grassland habitats during
the breeding season for courtship, nesting, foraging, rearing young, and
roosting. Breeding bird surveys indicate that between 1966 and 2004
grassland bird populations declined dramatically in Wisconsin. Of those
grassland species surveyed, 77% declined significantly, 23% were stable, and
none showed an increase. Species experiencing the greatest declines were
Henslow's sparrow, dickcissel, western meadowlark, vesper sparrow, and
grasshopper sparrow. These trends emphasize the urgent need to coordinate
species monitoring with habitat management practices to maximize the
beneficial impacts for at-risk species.

If you would like to join the search for lark sparrows, bobolinks and
meadowlarks attend the Grassland Bird Monitoring Training. To register for
the training program contact Angie Sommers at angie@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Training will be held in Downsville. Directions to training location will be
emailed closer to date. Wear clothes to be outside and bring binoculars if
you have them. Bring a bag dinner. *Registrations accepted until May 23*.
