Breeding Bird Surveys - Volunteers Sought

When:May-July, 2011, and subsequent years

Where:Eastern Iowa County (Barneveld, WI)

1) Brush Thicket Surveys

Volunteers are being sought to document bird use of brush thickets in open
landscapes. These thickets are important, sometimes critical, habitat for 7
or
more species of birds in southern and western WI. Species such as the State
Threatened Bell's vireo and three Species of Greatest Conservation Need (brown
thrasher, willow flycatcher, and field sparrow), as well as more common birds
such as yellow warbler, catbird, song sparrow, and clay-colored sparrow.

However, the retention of thickets in preserves dedicated to a wide range of
grassland birds can seriously interfere with the maintenance of critical
prairie/grassland habitat; habitat important to 10 species of grassland birds
that are listed as Endangered, Threatened, or Special Concern in WI, and
numerous prairie-dependant plants and insects. Therefore, managers of these
grassland sites wish to be certain that the brush thickets they do retain are
actually being used by brush-dependant birds.
If certain thickets are not being used, they could be eliminated and thereby
lower management costs and improve habitat for the prairie/grassland
species. With this in mind, managers wish to know which thickets are most and
least utilized by brush bird species to limit removing thickets which are
beneficial.

Here is where you can help! The Prairie Enthusiasts organization is seeking
volunteers to survey brush thickets for breeding bird use on their 570-acre
Mounds View Grassland Preserve, located 23 miles west of Madison. The plan is
to survey multiple times per year over several years. If you wish to help,
please contact Rich Henderson at tpe.rhenderson@xxxxxxx

2) Area Search of 40-acre Parcel

Volunteers are being sought to document breeding bird use of a 40-acre parcel
southeast of Barneveld, employing an Area Search technique. The parcel
consists of drained wetland, pasture grassland, and a variety of brush and
tree
thicket habitats. The purpose of the survey is to document change in bird use
over time as the parcel is restored back to its original wetland and upland
prairie habitat.
This is a project of The Prairie Enthusiasts organization and is taking place
on part of their 570-acre Mounds View Grassland Preserve, located 23 miles
west
of Madison. The plan is to survey multiple times per year over several years.
