On Monday this week I was very surprised to see a Virginia rail right off the
Oak Leaf Trail in Estabrook Park in Shorewood. This is a first for me in this
park. It appeared to be an immature bird and wasn’t shy as I stood with my dog
and watched it plod along in the underbrush. The long bill and white triangular
tail were key to identifying it. The nearest standing water was about 100 feet
away, across the path, in a low muddy area that typically has water in the
spring. I haven’t seen it since.
