The deluge has ended and the Ark has landed and Vernon Lake has become Vernon Marsh again. The DNR has drained a 20 acre lagoon to a mud flat and is excellent Shorebird habitat. It has not been discovered by a great variety of birds but what is there is there in numbers. Solitary Sandpipers account for about 80% of the shorebirds with (in order) killdeer, least SP, Lesser Yellowlegs, Snipe and a couple Black-bellied Plovers making up the remainder. Other lagoons remain water filled with numerous Egrets (100+), GB Herons, Green Herons, Sandhills, numerous Wood Ducks (100+), BW Teal, and a few Geese. The best find was a Merlin on a dead tree overlooking a lagoon. To get there, go in Benson Ave off of Cty XX south of Waukesha. Walk the fire lane to the south of the parking area for 1/2 mile. The lagoons are just past the second park area (not usable), right after the 70 yard wooded area. The drained lagoon is to your left(south). Most of the birds are at the far end of the mudflat (south end). If you keep walking, you will go through a grass land, another woods (bug spray) and finally another cattail marsh. Total: 43 species.
