I have to admit, my birding friends, of the few times I've been to Terrell's Island, west end of Lake Butte des Morts, I have not traversed any further than where my brother and I have spent this afternoon. It......was......incredible !!!, to say the least. The last time out there I walked as far as the abandoned house where the local conservation club actually holds meetings, I'm guessing, (this spot along the trail is where diversity plays a major role, the marshy area with gravel pathway turns into a grassy area with trees which harbored passerines galore for the fall bird count) but what my brother and I found out was 1/8th mile out further, where a breakwater, which extends almost a half a mile more and north into Butte des Morts creates a public hunting area for waterfowl, which separates the main lake from this manmade 'lake' which held the following: an estimated 2000 coots, many wigeon, redhead, canvasbacks, ringneck ducks and a few ruddies and who the heck knows what else. And, oh! I can't forget about the west end of the mass, also included were a bunch of geese and about 100 pelicans. The place was a proverbial zoo of waterfowl. PLUS, I had added 10 more species to my month list from this hike. The cans and ringnecks included, I also got harrier, kestrel, cranes, flicker, phoebe, horned larks, bluebirds, TREE SPARROWS, Fox (finally, my FOY) and swamp sparrows. And I'm STILL not done, this morning, while fishing, I gained osprey, 2 longspurs and 8 pine siskins. Birding today was anything but boring. Thus far, I'm at 72 species for the month, and my average for all October's in my history is in the low 80's. This could be broken quite readily. I also had a super-close view of a female kingfisher on the neighbor's boat launch, thanks to my 16 x 50 binocs. On top of all that, the weather couldn't have been any better. Picture perfect day for a perfect birding escapade. Let's see if this weak front brings anything tomorrow. Best of luck, from the town of Algoma, Paul Bruce, Winnebago Co. #################### You received this email because you are subscribed to the Wisconsin Birding Network (Wisbirdn).
