I hiked over to Summerton Bog today and saw a juvenile Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker by one of the open ponds. We had one in our yard in late November-early December so I'm thinking it's the same bird. I also spooked 3 Canadian Geese off a pond and walk down to another pond and there were 10 Morning Doves. I hiked a little bit further and heard some bird songs but I'm not too familiar with what I heard. If anyone can lead me in the right direction to learn more on what birds would be singing right now. I went down by one of the springs and the wind picked up and it started to snow but a Pileated Woodpecker landed on a larger tree briefly and took off toward the pine forest. I took a photo of it but my camera focused on the branch before it, still an interesting photo. I hear them in the woods but this is the first visual I've had of one. We drove down to Portage late this afternoon and I did spot a larger all brown bird sitting on a post all puffed up right before the train trestle, right next to the freeway, heading south on I-39, past Hwy D exit. I believe this was possibly the golden eagle that was seen previously, it was a lot larger then the Rough-Legged Hawk. I couldn't see the face but it was the size of an Eagle. Along the lines of bird songs, calls. I was shoveling the deck tonight and there was a bird in the woods right over our fence line, possible an owl, with a constant call. I would like to know if anyone knows what owls would be calling right now, or any evening bird. It was about an hour and a half ago. You can just message me so we don't clog up the wisbirdn feed.
