Dear Birders: Ah yes, such memories. My spark was in Virginia, near historic Carmel Church, just north of Richmond. I can't give you an exact date, but I was about five or six years old, maybe seven. We lived in SE Pennsylvania and we drove (leaving very, very early in the morning) there to my grandfather's house to visit him. My father's family had moved to Virginia from Minnesota for his mother's health. While there we went out to a field to see something (I have no idea what), and standing around on the edge of a pine woods, I saw this funny little bird walking down a tree trunk. The top of the head was brown with a little white spot on the back of the crown at the nape. I watched it until either we left or it flew away. For years I had no idea what it was, but I can still see it in my mind's eye today. I bet that you can't guess what's number one on my life list! Then a couple of years later in Pennsylvania while walking along a dirt road - there were lots of them then - at eye level, about seven feet away on some weeds at the side of the road, were a group of "wild canaries". I was amazed! So that was how things got started. It's been a joy every since. Good birding....................................
