This morning at about 9:00 A.M. on the south side of STH 49 across from the historical marker in Horicon Marsh was a very cooperative Buff-breasted Sandpiper which was only about 25-30 feet from the road for about 10 minutes. It then flew further back from the road. There is no longer a pond across from the historical marker, just wet mud, but it was attracting quite few shorebirds. Among them were 6 Black-bellied Plovers. There were about that many on the Fond du Lac County side of STH49 and 1 on Old Marsh Rd. There were many shorebirds at various places along STH49, Ledge Road, the auto tour, and Old Marsh Rd., but nothing unusual. Hustisford was much the same as last week. I estimated about 150-200 individuals of 10 species. No Baird's Sandpiper this week, but there were 8 Wilson's Phalaropes, 2 juvenile Short-billed Dowitchers, and many Stilt Sandpipers among the more common species. A group from Appleton was there, and they had spotted a probable Long-billed Dowitcher upstream from where we were talking, but I couldn't relocate it.
