Hi Folks, Jason Fleener (WI-DNR) and I have updated our shorebird google map for your birding pleasure! http://ebird.org/content/wi/news/managed-mud-fall-2012-guide-to-finding-shorebirds-on-wi-wildlife-areas Just click on the google map in the eBird story above. Keep those eBird and wisbirn reports coming and we'll update the map every week or so. Just perusing the eBird high counts from this Summer it looks like we have some really impressive numbers of adult shorebirds that stopped over at Horicon NWR and other locales (1200 Lesser yellowlegs at Horicon!). My advice for finding shorebirds in Southern Wisconsin is NOT; I repeat NOT to look where you would normally look for shorebirds. We're in a drought people! Instead, go to more permanent wetlands at DNR Wildlife Management Areas or USFWS Waterfowl Production Areas. These places are undergoing a natural drawdown due to the drought and often have very good mudflats. Aaron's Rose lake update is a case in point. Sheepskin Marsh WPA just west of Edgerton is also a great example of this phenomenon. Happy shorebirding!
