We arrived at North Point at 3:00 and were soon joined by Jim Hess.
Together we looked at several female-type scoters: 5 Surf Scoters and 4
Black Scoters. They were easily seen through binoculars, but the spotting
scope gave even better looks. Jim told us there was a female Long-tailed
Duck just south of the parking lot, near 3 of the Surf Scoters. We hurried
to take a look, and were gratified to find this beautiful bird. As the
three of us checked the rocky area and muddy/gravelly shore by the kiosk, we
were excited to find 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler, 1 Palm Warbler, 3 Ruby-crowned
Kinglets, 1 Golden-crowned Kinglet, 100 Ring-billed Gulls, 8 Herring Gulls,
35 Mallards, and 95 fly-by Red-breasted Mergansers (flying north! DUH!). A
great day to be birding the lakefront, even if it was cold! : )
