I arrived at Ledge Rd about 7:20 with the surf Scoter easily seen right near
the road. Several other birders were also there. In fact there were more cars
on this road then the Auto Tour a little later. (However when I returned to
the latter spot in mid afternoon it was unreal in the parking lot and cars
coming off the tour road!!) One lone Martin was at the houses by the nature
center. (I feel sorry for it and other insect eaters these upcoming days. The
Jersey rd pond had 30 Pectoral Sandpipers, both yellowlegs (total of 12), a
Wilson's Snipe and several Killdeer. When I returned back here in mid
afternoon all the shorebirds were still present. However the surprise was a
Whooping Crane feeding on the back side of the pond and then eventually out
into the adjacent corn field.
The Harvey/DM pond had a lone Snow Goose plus about 500 Bonaparte's Gulls and
standard waterfowl. Rowan Creek trail had a pair of Tufted Titmice that
followed me around, plus a Yellow-rumped Warbler (FOY) and other standard
birds. A nice walk in the the nice weather.
Please ignore any spelling errors as I broke my reading glasses early this week
and am awaiting the new ones this next week.
For the day i tallied 75 species, a very enjoyable time, especially considering
what the weather will be for the next few days.
