What I was trying to write before (which didn't come through on the "Reply",) was that Mark Martin has told me that Sandhill Cranes will predate the nests of other birds, which is why you'll often see them being attacked by Red-winged Blackbirds. They know when the parents are so agitated, the nest is nearby, and they'll start to actively search for it. Cranes (and Great Blue Herons, etc.) are omnivores, after all.
