This is usually a message seen in mid-July/August when the cladophora matts or, in the past, alewife beachings, have caused an upsurge in bacteria counts. But, tonight, I was informed that the Grant Park Beach road was being locked at 5pm in anticipation of some rough Hurricane Sandy-related surf. On reading the predictions for high waves, I went to both South Metro and Bender beaches this afternoon, and found the first buffleheads in the sheltered harbor at Bender, and little else. Of interest though, not a single yellow rumped warbler was found at South Metro, even as there'd been a new hatch of ?gnats? along the main pathway, and over a dozen y-r's yesterday. Did they watch the weather channel or get the pressure-related message to split? I am guessing that Bender Park will be closed tonight as well. So much for thrill seekers! (the surfers will figure out a way to get to the beach, I know) Had my FOY American Tree Sparrow in the yard this morning. At least two red breasted nuthatch seem everpresent, and an occasional siskin suggests they may stick around this winter. Or not.
