A friend who is a doctoral student in Panama studying ornithology, my brother from Mississippi, and I headed up to Alvin yesterday and got an early start to birding today. At the local feeders in Alvin we had COMMON REDPOLLS and several PINE GROSBEAKS! The PIGRs were life birds for all of us and we were fortunate enough to get looks at both male and females. We were worried we wouldn't see any Evening Grosbeaks, but for three wonderful minutes, a male and female EVENING GROSBEAK joined the others at the feeders! We met the homeowners who were extremely friendly (and refilled all the feeders when they saw we were watching for birds) and said they have hardly seen any this winter, so we were very lucky to get them. We then cruised the area and visited the Brule River Campground and Pine River Road. After the first 2 hours of light, things got very slow. We did manage to find a flock of 80 SNOW BUNTINGS, 1 male RED CROSSBILL (at the campground), and 11 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS just as the sun was setting. Other notables for us were RAVEN, BALD EAGLE, and PILEATED WOODPECKER. We missed on Gray Jays, Spruce Grouse, and Boreal Chickadees; those will be our goal for tomorrow! I want to thank Tim Hahn, Kay Kavanaugh, Peter Fissel, and Mike Duchek for offering such great advice and being willing to help me show my brother and friend several species that they really have no chance of seeing any other time. We would have been very lost without your help. Zak Sutton Waukesha, Waukesha Co #################### You received this email because you are subscribed to the Wisconsin Birding Network (Wisbirdn).
