Twenty eager birders gathered this morning in Lake Park, including two young boys on their first ever bird walk. After a slow start, we ran into a hotspot in one ravine with AMERICAN REDSTART, GOLDEN-WINGED, CANADA, and BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS, RED-EYED VIREO, GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, and RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER. A stop on the lakefront allowed us to study SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS and SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS on the algae mat. Also spotted today were several BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS, multiple RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS, and BLACK-AND-WHITE, TENNESSEE, and CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLERS. We had 41 species in all.
