This morning the resident Red-shouldered Hawk was perched on a tree limb
overhanging the river near the Arena boat landing, and seen from the bridge
crossing the river. I didn't think my presence bothered it, but after a
couple minutes it started calling and flew off. I should have remained in my
vehicle.
I checked Lower Wyoming Road and saw one eagle, but it was too distant to
identify. This afternoon, in Sauk County northwest of Spring Green, I had
much better luck near the junction of Cummings Rd. and Little Bear Rd. The
northwest wind must have created some nice updrafts because an adult Golden
Eagle soared over the bluff for about 10 minutes and perched for a couple of
minutes.
I don't know if the areas I visited in Iowa and Sauk County were like this
in the winter, but there were an impressive number of juncos and American
Tree Sparrows flushing from the side of the road, nearly continuously as I
drove. Perhaps they are staging for their journey to the north.
