I thoroughly birded Chequamegon Bay from Washburn south and east to Ashland on
Monday morning. Sunshine and calm winds provided great visibility. Fairly slow
overall but some highlights included:

*136 Common Loons - scattered all over but Washburn coaldock and Ashland
breakwall area were best (scope needed for most)
*225+ Horned Grebes - most from the breakwall east, esp. from First and Second
Landings east of town (ends of Johnson and Reykdal Rds.)
*2 Red-necked Grebes - way, way out from First Landing (also visible from
Second Landing)
*13 Surf Scoters - 5 behind Lake Superior Lodge between Short and Long Bridges,
8 in diver flock out from Maslowski Beach
*4 Black Scoters - all behind Lake Superior Lodge
*Only two flocks of divers on the whole bay and basically no dabblers - total
of 260+ Redheads, 175+ Greater Scaup, 25+ Lesser Scaup, and a smattering of
others.
*Geese nearly non-existent - need a new flush of birds from the north!
*Only one shorebird anywhere, an Amer. Golden-Plover.
*A handful of Common Terns and 0 Bonaparte's Gulls.
*Few landbirds, best being a late-ish Gray Catbird along the downtown Ashland
waterfront.

Gorgeous day to be outside...
