It was uncommon to see a Red-headed woodpecker fly over Long Lake in Sauk
County this morning. Red-headed woodpeckers have been in steep decline for
years, but I have been seeing and hearing them this year on occasion in
northern Iowa County, WI. I wonder if dead tree stands are coming back
because this supports their habitat. There are quite a few dead trees and
stumps along the Wisconsin River near Spring Green that may entice
Red-headed woodpeckers to nest. Good birding!
