On 9/30 I reported an observation of a flock of Western Grebes in the Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge in Trempealeau County, south of the Kiep's Island Dike trail. Upon further reflection and lots of backchannel help from experienced birders, it seems more likely these birds were probably not Westerns. Horned Grebes seems to be the consensus based on body shapes, short thick necks, small heads, shorter dark bills and dark cap shape. Thanks to all who helped me get a better grip on winter plumaged gaggles of grebes!
